Ancient Hindu Scriptures are an ocean of knowledge. They teach us how to live and how not to live a life. Let's dive together to find some pearls of knowledge from our ancient scriptures. We can enhance our knowledge just by sharing it. I am taking 'Garg Samhita' as my first text to read and share the summary according to my understanding and my views on this sacred text of Radha Krishna, the Divine bond of the divinity itself. Readers' views and an addition to my knowledge are most welcome.

Chapter 14 of Sri Vrindavan-khanda, Garg Samhita.

This chapter explain an important background of the Kaliya episode.

Kaliya originally lived in Ramanaka Dvipa, the island of serpents. But he had committed an offense against Garuda, the mighty carrier of Lord Vishnu. Because of his arrogance and poisonous nature, he disrespected Garuda and refused to offer the proper tribute meant for him.
Enraged, Garuda attacked the serpents. Unable to tolerate Garuda’s power, Kaliya fled from Ramanaka Dvipa.
Before Kaliya entered the waters of Yamuna, his life had already become a tale of fear and restless wandering.
Wherever he went — across the seven dvipas, the seven khandas, and the seven oceans — Kaliya saw only one shadow following him: Garuda.
Terrified, the serpent fled through the realms — Bhooloka, Bhuvarloka, Svarloka, Maharloka, even Janaloka. Yet nowhere did he find peace. Fear traveled faster than his body. His heart burned with anxiety. Sleep abandoned him. Happiness never touched him.
At last, exhausted and trembling, Kaliya approached the lotus feet of Ananta Shesha, the king of serpents and the eternal servant of the Lord.
Bowing down, circumambulating Him with folded hands, the once-arrogant serpent now spoke in humility:
“O Lord, master and maintainer of the worlds, You uphold the universe effortlessly. You are all-powerful and compassionate. Please grant me shelter.”
Seeing Kaliya frightened and softened by suffering, Lord Ananta spoke in a voice sweet and reassuring:
Intelligent Kaliya, hear My words. There is no refuge for you in the three worlds — except one.
Then He revealed an ancient event.
Long ago, in Vrindavan, a great sage named Sage Saubhari performed severe austerities within the waters of Yamuna for ten thousand years. One day, while the sage was absorbed in meditation, Garuda swooped down and killed the king of the fish in those waters.
Seeing the fish and its family struck with grief, the compassionate sage became angry. Desiring to protect the innocent beings of Yamuna, he cursed Garuda:
“O king of birds! If from this day you enter these waters again and eat the fish here, you shall die at once!”
Out of fear of the sage’s curse, Garuda never returned to that region.
Lord Ananta then instructed:
“O Kaliya, go at once to the forest of Lord Krishna in Vrindavan. By My order, make your home in the Yamuna. There you will be safe. Garuda will not harm you.”
Hearing these divine words, Kaliya went with his wives and children to the Yamuna. There he settled — believing he had finally found safety.
But what he thought was protection became the stage of divine correction.
For though Garuda would not enter those waters, Krishna Himself would.

Reflections

Kaliya searched the universe for shelter but found none. Only when he bowed down did guidance appear.
Yet even after receiving mercy, he allowed his poisonous nature to pollute the sacred Yamuna.
Fear may bring us to God —
but transformation alone keeps us safe.
Soon, Krishna will dance upon those hoods — not merely to punish, but to purify.
